Hedgehog’s Dilemma

The Hedgehog’s Dilemma (or porcupine dilemma) is an analogy about the difficulties for humans wishing to become emotionally or psychologically close with other people. It was originally described by Arthur Schopenhauer where he compared it to a common situation among hedgehogs, where in order to survive the cold of the winter, they must burrow together to share warmth; however, they must also keep a certain amount of distance as they cannot avoid hurting each other with their sharp quills. One must always find a balance between closeness and comfort in order to survive.

The hedgehog’s dilemma is used to justify or explain introversion and isolationism.
